Thai Tones

Thai is a tonal language. It is very important that you get a basic grip on the common tones before you start getting into the details of the language. The first and most important task is developing the ability to hear the differences between the tones. If you can not understand how the different tones sound, it will be very hard for you to produce them yourself.

There are five tones used in spoken Thai: low, mid, high, falling and rising. The tone at which a word is pronounced determines the meaning of the word. A relatively small
amount of words have the exact same base sound but have two or more different meanings according to their pronounced tone.
